The centerpiece of a comprehensive mosquito management plan

Mosquito Misting Systems

How Do Mosquito Misting Systems Work?

Although these systems have been around since the early 2000's, many people are still unfamiliar with mosquito misting systems and their benefits. Over the last 20 years, more than 1,000 pest control companies have been installing these systems for their high end customers, with an estimated 75,000+ systems installed in the US to date.

What Is a Mosquito Misting System?

Mosquito misting systems generally consist of two parts: The misting system itself, and the nozzle circuit that surrounds the area of coverage. The system itself consists of a control unit, motor, and pump situated on top a 55-gallon tank, usually placed somewhere out of the way near your A/C or pool equipment. The system is then connected to a circuit of ¼ inch high-pressure nylon tubing, with discreetly placed misting nozzles installed every 10 feet around the perimeter of your back yard. The circuit of tubing and nozzles can be mounted to your fence or the lower eaves of your home with cable clamps. All of the parts of the nozzle circuit have been designed and selected to be as unobtrusive as possible, and with the numerous tubing color options, a properly installed system is barely noticeable.

Once the system is installed, it will run automatically at pre-set times throughout the day, typically three times daily for 30 seconds each cycle. These mist cycles eliminate mosquitos and other biting insects, and create a repelling effect afterwards.

What Are The Benefits Of a Mosquito Misting System?

By installing a mosquito misting system in your yard, you are able to significantly reduce the mosquito population, leading to fewer mosquito bites and getting more out of your back yard.

The key aspect of a mosquito misting system that no other mosquito control product can replicate is the consistency of the treatment. A yard fogging treatment done by a pest control company is advertised to last up to 21 days, but the reality is that as soon as they leave, that chemical begins breaking down. Additionally, sunlight and water will begin to break down those products, so if you have a sprinkler system or any rain, the effectiveness of those types of treatments immediately begins to decline. In contrast, an automatic misting system is delivering a significantly lower dose of chemical, but by consistently treating the area with daily mist cycles, you are creating a much more effective protective zone around your yard.

What About The Chemicals?

There are a few different types of chemical available for use in mosquito misting systems, and all of them have been approved for use by the EPA and the various state agencies that regulate pest control products.

The most popular products are pyrethrum or permethrin based products, and by mixing a small amount of this chemical into 55 gallons of water, the diluted product has less chemicals present than a bottle of bug spray.

For example, a half gallon of a product like MGK Sector is mixed in with 54.5 gallons of water during a fill. That bottle itself is only 20% active ingredients, and when that is mixed into a full misting system reservoir, the resulting mixture is only 0.18% active ingredient, less than 13 ounces total!

The reason we can get such effective control with such a little amount is the consistency of the misting cycles, treating the area 3 times daily.
